Eskom Viva Street Heats Up Global Edutainment
Viva Solar Soapies!
Viva Street was created to encourage community for Eskom’s Solar Initiative. A 6-part soapie in 4 languages was created and broadcast on community radio stations, highlighting the advantages and benefits of free hot water from the sun. The on air component was synergised with an outreach program on the ground, installing the units and educating householders as to their use. A cartoon series was also created to further educate residents in an entertaining way.

Eskom provided free solar geysers to disadvantaged householders in Tembisa. The radio series coincided with the installation schedule.
The Viva Street message demonstrated the solar geyser initiative and showed neighbours how to use the device in health and happiness.

Viva Street was selected for the EE5 Conference in New Delhi in 2011 where the campaign was presented to an international audience of Education Entertainment practitioners. The panel: Local Meets Global, showcased a variety of consciousness-raising initiatives.
